for the past year, I have been playing with different ways to offer movement coaching online…PDF documents, a training library with a password, an online training app, teleportation or astral projection… and they’ve all been a bit of a bust for me.
Pictured: my iPhone’s “PHOTOS” collection. You can see that it is full of videos of me showing you how to do wonderful things!
Note: You will also notice that it is still on my phone and not somewhere that you can use them.
Unpictured: me yelling obscenities at the internet/my phone/the training app I use/ the store for not delivering wine.
I see this a lot with clients as they try to put together a movement, nutrition or self-care (sleep, social life etc) plan. Shit just doesn’t work the way you want it to and a hundred million things get in the way of what your original goal was.
Most people handle it in one of two ways:
1. Quit. Because whatever. Didn’t want that thing I really wanted anyway. Even though I really wanted it.
2. Internalize self-hatred or anger and double down on what wasn’t working because just working harder might work this time.
This typically results in metabolic damage, burn out and reinforcement of what they previously believed about themselves (I’m not capable…I’m just lazy…)
I’d like to offer a third option
Make it EASIER. Make your success absolutely fail-proof! Only commit to things you know 100% you can complete and remind yourself of how successful you are each time you complete them. Over the holidays – commit to JUST making sure you eat breakfast, get to bed before midnight or moving for two minutes at a time.
You heard me … TWO MINUTES! A study came out a few years ago that revealed that you can actually accrue your exercise instead of committing to the 30-60 minute chunks we’d previously been overwhelmed by.
So here’s where the holiday movement challenge comes in…
You don’t have to wait until 2018. You don’t have to spend an hour on the stair master burning off Christmas cookies (in fact…please don’t.) You don’t have to make any major life changes. Just make your metabolic choices, movement and mindfulness practices EASIER on yourself, then remember to celebrate how freaking successful you were and are.
You’re a rockstar. You got this.
(PS. Those of you who are now pulling up emails, texts, Facebook posts and verbal commitments that say “online coaching is coming!” and wondering what the hell I’ve been doing with my life… yeah. I’ve been letting overwhelm and frustration win. But I’m taking my own advice and chunking it down, getting some help and giving myself grace to just DO IT even if it’s not perfect. Stay tuned. Again.)
