Have you ever been in a situation where you’ve suffered from chronic neck or back pain? Are you dealing with it now, or do you know someone who is? It SUCKS! It can be annoying at best or debilitating at worst. Really, not fun!
Did you know that chronic pain actually affects more people in the United States than heart disease, cancer and diabetes combined? And that neck and back pain make up the majority of people who suffer from a chronic condition? Some people find temporary relief through the use of certain drug therapies. Unfortunately, those same drug therapies can have a range of serious side effects – from the way they make you feel, to digestive issues, to causing entirely different problems altogether on top of the chronic pain. Your body may even build up a tolerance to the drugs you’re using, reducing their effectiveness over time – and requiring ever-stronger doses, or even stronger drugs. It can become a roller coaster of frustration. If only there were a better way.
Welcome to YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM! What most pain sufferers don’t realize is that chronic neck and back pain is complex and, at its core, is a miscommunication between the body and the brain. Ultimately, then, treating chronic neck and back pain boils down to re-educating and re-wiring the brain and the body to integrate better together.
That sounds complicated – and what does that really mean? It means your brain and body need to work as a team. What began as some kind of trauma, with the brain sending a pain signal for protection against further injury, turns chronic when the brain doesn’t stop sending the pain signal to protect that body part, even after the injury has healed.
So many people who suffer with chronic pain feel like they have lost control of their lives and lost their freedom. Achieving some sense of control over your body – and over your pain – is an essential first step in restoring confidence and HOPE for improvement, and to regaining your power over chronic neck and back pain. It starts by understanding that your pain does not define you – you are a whole person. Your pain may be a part of who you are, but your pain is not your whole person.
At Forest Coaching and Studios in Madison, I work with sufferers of chronic neck and back pain – whether it presents as physical pain, anxiety or a sense of something “not being right” – using an integrated and systemic approach. In addition to addressing the site of acute or chronic pain, I help you look deeply into your life and experience to heal from the ground up. A positive approach helps you feel empowered and energized. Empowerment is the beginning of a journey, a foundation upon which you can build your own long-term neck and back pain management tools that work for you.
