In fall of this 2018, Cari attended Z Health’s R-Phase certification. This certification had created a “user manual” for all of my prior education and I was so excited for her to have that same lens for her expansive collection of experiences, coaching tools and education! Talking brains has become pretty common around here … and here’s a quick peek into her experience and what’s been happening since! xo -Annie
In fall of 2018, I completed the Z Health R Phase Certification, and I left with a load of excitement as a result of learning more specific ways one can influence strength, range of motion and energy, through impacting input into the brain.
I also left with an even greater commitment to a key component of my coaching philosophy : “If they haven’t learned, you haven’t taught them.”
Now, even more so, I believe this to be true and that it is so important for coaches to be able to look through multiple lenses so they can better identify what a student, player, or client’s obstacles are, and how to overcome them.
Taking into account a person’s brain when coaching empowers our personal training clients here in Madison, WI and anywhere we work. Where previously an athlete may chalk their struggle up to simply being bad at the task, and see it as a permanent state, there are more tools to unlock their kettlebell, barbell, running or sports potential by giving their brain the appropriate information.
As a soccer coach, I see this as another piece missing from our youth development models. in many cases neurological training could improve common struggles I often hear expressed by coaches in U.S. Soccer.
Overall this training explained the neurology behind a lot of what I coach, while adding in new tools, which sometimes changes the ‘why’ behind what I am teaching. But one can take away that the mind and body are one and the same, they are always adapting (via the brain), and the more we know about how various inputs through our movement, thoughts, and senses affect our adaptation, the better we can steer the ship of adaptation instead of floating along wherever the current happens to carry us.
